Thai Bodywork

The foundation of Thai Bodywork is based in Buddhism and Thai Element Theory and I use these components to fuel my practice. My Thai work is done on a floor mat with the receiver wearing loose, comfortable clothing.

There are many techniques in Thai massage I may use and each session will be unique and change according to what you need and how you are responding to the work. I may create superficial friction with my hands to warm the skin layer. I may compress your tissue with my hands, knees or feet. I may put you in different stretches to find length and release where you need it.

I may use my fists to rhythmically beat different areas of your body, like the outside of your I.T. Band, hips or around the scapula. I may use my thumbs to follow the β€œsen”, translated as the pathways of movement, to stimulate the element of wind and increase circulation. I may use tools like hot herbal compresses , cupping, scraping or application of balms and linaments to aid in the process of welcoming spaciousness into the body. Massage is an ongoing conversation with infinite space to explore and experience healing. I work through the layers of the body, melding my intuition and your expression of what your being needs.

** A note on Thai Bodywork, cultural appropriation and my cultural positionality: Traditional Thai massage has many levels of expertise that a practitioner can choose to ascend to. The techniques that have been gifted to me through the lineage of my teachers Nephyr Jacobsen, Varuni Bond and Tevijjo Yogi with the knowledge that I am not a Thai person and am practicing outside of Thailand in a non-traditional cultural context. It is important to me as a practitioner to engage in cultural appreciation vs. appropriation by honoring the lineage of the teachings myself and my clients are benefiting from and staying within the limits and boundaries of the traditional knowledge I have been gifted in ceremony. While I am also trained in massage techniques that come from the lineages of my European ancestors, I find that Thai massage has made a wonderful addition to my practice and I am very grateful for the gift of that knowledge from my Thai Bodywork teachers.

I am currently living and practicing in Bellingham, Washington on occupied Semiahmoo and Coast Salish land. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest and am kin to European settlers. If you have further questions about my identity that you feel are important to you as we work together, please feel free to contact me.
